2019 Regional CotY Award Winner, Residential Detached Structure
The client lived in Wyoming but owned a property in Oakland, California, where her adult son and grandson lived. She wanted to be a part of the family’s day-to-day activities while respecting her adult son’s space. A freestanding Auxiliary Dwelling Unit was built to take advantage of streamlined laws and provide an independent space. The unit has aging-in-place features such as zero-threshold transitions, contrasting floors and counters, and a roll-in shower. The unit features green Hardie board siding and trim, polished concrete floors with radiant heat, no VOC paints and adhesives, LED lighting, and a container garden on the roof.
