An existing 880-square-foot bungalow sitting on a steep site in East Austin was busting at the seems for a family of five. An 1140-square-foot addition steps up the hill added new bedrooms, storage, and laundry space. Above the addition, a generous master suite tucks into the tree canopy. The previous layout was adjusted to create a central family room with a new outdoor patio adjacent to it. A more open kitchen, dining and living arrangement and greater efficiency allowed for a much-needed pantry. New cladding unifies the design. The remodeled bungalow has little perceived incursion on the traditional frontage.
