5 Bathroom Design Trends for 2023
By Industry Partner Re-Bath
2023 brings some exciting trends in bathroom design and remodeling we can’t wait to share. So, without
further ado, here are the top trends in bathroom design this year.
Bathroom Design Trend #1: Light is the New White
White will always be around, but the use of it as a central color in bathrooms (and kitchens) is fading. In 2023, we’ll see light colors and light-toned finishes replacing white to give spaces that airy, open feel in a softer, more organic way. We’re not just talking about light khakis and yellows! Soft pastels, light blues, and pale greens are game, too. That doesn’t mean your bathroom needs to be monochromatic. Choose complementary shades and accent with a dark color or pattern to add contrast and visual interest.
Bathroom Design Trend #2: Decorative Lighting
There are oh-so-many lighting styles to choose from, but homeowners tend to choose more basic, functional fixtures in bathrooms because of the need for task lighting. This year, decorative lighting takes center stage in bathroom design. From pendant lights over the vanity or shower to chandeliers that add a touch of glamour, keep an open mind when selecting lighting for your bathroom remodel. Consider unconventional fixtures, too, such as wall sconces that can be used as task lighting near mirrors and recessed lighting to highlight task areas or design features.
Remember to keep your bathroom’s size and layout in mind when selecting light fixtures and incorporate a mix of task, ambient, and accent lighting to create a space that’s both functional and stylish.
Bathroom Design Trend #3: Mix and Match Tiles
A few years ago, mixing metals was a hot trend. This year? It’s all about mixing tiles! As bathroom tile continues to trend, we’re seeing every style from vintage subway to modern hex. If you’re anything like us, it’s difficult to choose just one! Here are a few ways you can mix them to great style effect:
Patterns: Pair tiles with different geometric patterns or motifs to add visual interest.
Colors: Add a pop to your bathroom by pairing tiles in different shades or complementary colors.
Textures: Add depth by mixing smooth and rough tiles or tiles with different finishes, such as matte and
gloss.
Remember to keep the overall design in mind when choosing tiles to mix and match. Keep a digital file of different tiles you like and share them with your Design Consultant to get expert styling advise!

Bathroom Design Trend #4: Beyond Transitional
Transitional style was born from the combination of traditional and contemporary design. This year, we’re seeing this idea take off in new trends like Japandi, a mix of Scandinavian and Japanese influences. Interior designers are mixing elements from rustic, traditional, contemporary, and transitional styles.
Here are a few tips for blending your favorite styles in the bathroom:
Stick to one color palette. This will help tie different elements together to create one unified look.
Mix and match finishes. Bathroom fixtures are an easy place to start. Mix polished chrome and brass, for example, to create visual interest without losing your overall design aesthetic.
Play with materials. Use a mix of materials, such as wood, stone, and metal, to create a pulled-together, layered look.
Add personality. Accessories, such as towel bars, shower seats, and artwork, add character to your bathroom. Choose those that reflect your personal style and work with the overall design of your space.
Bathroom Design Trend #5: Spa to the Next Level
Creating a bathroom that looks and feels like a luxury spa has been trending for years. And why not? Any trend that makes us look and feel our best is bound to become a mainstay! This year, look for spa-like bathrooms to mirror elements of a high-end cocktail bar – elegant and sophisticated. A few key elements to incorporate into your bathroom remodel if this is the trend for you:
Luxurious materials. Think marble (flooring, countertops), stone-surround showers (gorgeous and easy to clean!), wood vanities and custom storage, and leather (framed mirrors and seating). Feeling extra indulgent? Incorporate a steam shower or jacuzzi tub.
Stylish lighting. That chandelier we mentioned in trend number two? It belongs right here! Attention to detail. Decorative cabinet pulls, glass-front cabinets, and wide molding add to the overall atmosphere.
Comfortable seating. You don’t need a huge space to fit a cozy seat in your bathroom. A small stool tucked under a length of countertop creates the perfect spot for applying face masks and mini facials. This year, incorporating the hottest trends into your bathroom remodel is more fun and inspiring than ever. The only rule is there are no rules!
