2019 National CotY Award Winner, Universal Design – Kitchen
With an eye toward the future, a retired orthopedic surgeon set his sights on an accessible kitchen remodel in a historic high-rise in Northwest D.C. The updates needed to prepare him for just about any eventuality, enabling him to age gracefully in place. A new open floor plan with 4-foot aisles allows for easy movement between workstations and into the living area. Warm cherry cabinets set the scene with soapstone counters, stainless accents and celadon walls. Other features include rollout pantries, pullout shelves, lower appliances, drawer storage, variable counter heights and foam rubber floor tiles. From top to bottom, clever design details ease access and maximize usability.
