New home ownership launched the kitchen renovation of this historic home. The clients disliked the style, disconnectedness, and lack of natural light. They wanted to see their guests arriving while offering a welcoming access to the outside. An aggressive remodeling plan involved a vertical expansion, removing the second floor to create a cathedral ceiling with hand-hewn beam tresses. Removing walls and adding glass doors and windows increased natural light. The original exterior stone wall was reclaimed and exposed to highlight the home’s history. An oversized furniture-style island boasts a granite countertop and fire clay farm sink, while chicken coop vents were repurposed into rustic, pendant lights.
