This project transformed a traditional staircase into a sculpture-like piece of art. The clients desired the staircase to complement their collection of artwork and sculptures. The design process yielded the selection of hand hammered wrought iron elements, combined with black and claro walnut. Custom fabricated wrought iron bars and details cut in the field for installation were re-toned on site by heat quenching in peanut oil and torch curing to match the finish from the blacksmith. Building codes were complied with though there appears to be no consistent adherence to dimensional standards in the irregular, curving balusters.
