2019 National CotY Award Winner, Residential Detached Structure
These clients desired usable outdoor living space as a complementary extension to their existing home. The new structure is a steel canopy floating amongst the trees, sheltering an outdoor fireplace and living, dining and kitchen areas. The canopy extends just over the pool, linking them spatially and visually. Wood soffits contrast with the Lueder’s limestone masonary found on the fireplace surround, floor and wall. Oxidized steel panels in the fireplace and behind the grill help create focal points. Its horizontal design echoes the low hills that it frames towards the east. The result is a serene space for gathering or just taking in the beauty of the Austin hillside.
